What can I do to get over OBSESSING over my partner cheating on me!?!

Infidelity is one of the most traumatic things that can happen within an intimate relationship. It can turn a person's world upside down in a matter of seconds...It will cause a person to rethink their entire "reality," questioning what is actually real and what is a lie, as the brain tries to process the trauma and create a coherent narrative. When a coherent narrative is unable to be created, that trauma will fragment in the brain, thus becoming easily triggered by some of the most unexpected things (ie: songs, smells, restaurants, etc). When questions go unanswered, the thoughts of "what if" often feel torturing and unrelenting...

There are many steps involved in helping people process the trauma of betrayal. However, when the brain is stuck in a negative feedback loop, obsessing over the same scene(s) over and over, day after day, it is important that the betrayed partner find some psychological relief. Since talk therapy has its limitations for trauma, I often use specific trauma techniques, such as EMDR, Tapping or the Havening Technique. If you need help to stop obsessing, it may be time to reach out to a professional who can help bring you some relief!
